Bloody Marvels

sumbuk A very difficult album to categorize, it spans genre; or perhaps ignores is a better description. In general one could call it avantprogfusion with occasional dives into the quasi-classical.While he doesn't sound at all like Zappa, I can't help but feel Zappa is his spiritual godfather. This is VERY good.

Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) Oh, wow, weird stuff... lacking a more precise description, I'd apply the quite broad term "avantgarde" to it. At times it comes close to RIO, espescially when sharp pipe organ sounds, wind instruments, and Richard Larcombe's ("Stars In Battledress") harmonium kick in, giving me a nice "Andy Kirk flashback". Otherwise, the genre membership is largely undefined or diffuse - like on the strangely groovy "Jupiter Sneezed", which is something of a ragtime... maybe... Well, at the bottom line, I think this music deserves a new genre, which I'd label "unexpected rock", because of its highly unpredictable nature. Favorite track: Phobos.

Alan Terrill An unexpected treat, this album contains a great set of instrumental compositions in a pretty unique style. Some of the string pieces remind me of l'Ensemble Raye while the superb 'Beyond Astronomy's Reach' brought Von Zamla to mind, and others just don't sound like anyone else. Great playing throughout ,and nothing he has played on before (Guapo, Knifeworld) will prepare you for this. Astoundingly good. Favorite track: Beyond Astronomy's Reach.

about

Following the release of his acclaimed collection of electronic and sample-based music, Emmettronica, in 2013, Bloody Marvels is a collection of largely instrumental pieces performed on acoustic instruments. Emmett is a master of guitar as well as keyboards, and plays a bewildering variety of both stringed, keyed, struck and blown instruments to create this beguiling, atmospheric and haunting album. Strong on melody and mood, with occasional moments of both playfulness and terror, these fourteen songs – together with two bonus tracks – will transport the listener into Emmett’s musical realm, leaving a long-lasting impression of its beauty in the heart and the mind.
